The first NFT ever sold was called Quantum, created by Kevin McCoy and Anil Dash in May 2014 in the Sothebys’ marketplace. It originally sold for $4 and last sold for $1.4 million.
The first NFT project, Etheria, was created in 2015. Most of the NFTs in this project went unsold for five years until renewed interest in NFTs caused them to sell out within 24 hours on March 13, 2022 for $1.4 million.
The vast majority of NFTs as we know them today are defined by the ERC-721 standard, first proposed in 2017, and are deployed on the Ethereum blockchain. Note the standard that defines many cryptocurrency tokens is the ERC-20 token standard, similarly running on the Ethereum blockchain.
